Hiyoshiya is a long-established workshop / store of Kyo-wagasa founded in the late Edo period. The workshop has been settled for over 160 years since the first opening in Kyoto, and we have inherited the traditional techniques and continued to manufacture Japanese umbrellas (Kyo- Wagasa).
Today, we make and restore a variety of Kyo-Wagasa and we are the only workshop which inherits this special techniques.
However, as the needs of Wagasa started to fade, Hiyoshiya was on a verge of closing down. That is when Kotaro Nishibori, succeeded Hiyoshiya in 2004. He came up with a company's philosophy; ""Tradition is Continuing Innovation"" to keep the tradition alive, and to expand the use of tradition further by developing design lighting that utilizes the structure and technology of Kyo-wagasa.
Hiyoshiya today has revived the sales by 150 times, as a group's total. We also provide this know-how and network to other businesses aiming to expand overseas, and we are engaged in interior design projects, consulting and educational businesses, tourism, etc. with the desire to widely help promote traditional industries.
