Enjoy a cool Kyoto summer amid wind chimes and traditional Japanese umbrellas (wagasa) at Kyoto Aquarium. ‘Jellyfish, Umbrellas, and Wind Chimes’ opens Saturday, May 31, 2025, and continues through September 30.

From Saturday, May 31, to Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the Kyoto Aquarium will host ‘Jellyfish, Umbrellas, and Wind Chimes’, a special limited-time event featuring about 170 handmade wind chimes shaped like jellyfish and traditional Kyoto-style umbrellas decorated with jellyfish artwork, showing the beauty and variety of these amazing sea creatures.

The long-established kyo-wagasa maker HIYOSHIYA created and restored jellyfish themed traditional umbrellas for this event. Using traditional techniques and delicate ink painting, the umbrellas beautifully capture the graceful movement of jellyfish in water.

About ‘Jellyfish, Umbrellas, and Wind Chimes’

Following their warm reception last year, the Jellyfish Kyoto Umbrellas are back again this summer. These wagasa come in various sizes and feature hand-painted ink artwork depicting 18 different species of jellyfish kept at the Kyoto Aquarium. Each umbrella is carefully crafted by skilled artisans. The traditional umbrellas beautifully capture the gentle, drifting motion of jellyfish underwater, creating a dreamlike and captivating display.

In addition, the popular Jellyfish Wind Chimes, crafted by the glass art studio TAKU GLASS from Niigata Prefecture, will also be on display. Under the supervision of the aquarium’s jellyfish care team, each piece delicately expresses the unique features of real jellyfish such as their color, shape, and pattern.

Event Period: May 31 (Sat) - September 30 (Tue), 2025

Admission: Free (aquarium admission fee required)

Location: Kyoto Aquarium, 2nd Floor Terrace

Note: The exhibition may be changed or canceled without notice due to weather of facility conditions.
