Hiyoshiya - KOTORI

‘KOTORI’ is a lighting fixture created by Kyoto-style umbrella manufacturer, Hiyoshiya, utilizing traditional techniques passed down through five generations since the late Edo period. Despite being on the market for 16 years, it remains a long-selling item that is crafted daily. The original model involves artisans meticulously connecting 40 sets (80 pieces) of evenly split bamboo for the main and support ribs. Using cotton thread, they intricately assemble each piece, employing carefully selected washi paper from domestic production areas. Each umbrella is handcrafted with precision by Kyoto umbrella artisans.

SOU-SOU

SOU-SOU is a Kyoto-based brand that produces textile designs expressing the seasons and atmospheres of Japan in a lively and modern way. With the concept of 'Creating a New Japanese Culture,' the brand actively incorporates traditional materials and techniques while developing creations that harmonize with contemporary lifestyles.

Captivating Designs and the Enchanting Atmosphere of Tradition

After three years of dedicated research, both companies have crafted three distinct designs inspired by Arabic numerals, by the the bouncing movement of a ball, and a design featuring ‘hiragana,' one of the Japanese syllabaries and integral part of Japanese culture.

The pop-style designs by ‘SOU-SOU,' arranged to evoke the charm of Japan, seamlessly blend with the calming presence and warmth of the traditional umbrella lighting. When the lamp is illuminated, it casts shadow and light patterns on the surrounding walls and ceiling, inviting everyone into a playful and tranquil space where time flows leisurely.

The collaborative endeavor to create a new design lighting between Hiyoshiya, innovating the history of Kyoto-style umbrellas, and SOU-SOU, expressing Japanese aesthetics in textiles, is a challenge. We hope it becomes a beacon, brightly illuminating the future of Japan's traditional culture.
